We caught up with TSE ambassador Phoebe Georgiou of @souldbodybyphoebe to talk about her start in yoga and approach to wellbeing. Phoebe is a lover of yoga, personal development, and living the moto of 'healthy body, healthy mind'. A girl after our hearts. Here’s what she had to say.
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH YOGA?
I began my yoga journey after an injury due to weight training in the gym! I have always been active in the gym since I was 17. I have always been an active person and found peace of mind in movement.
HOW DID YOU TURN IT INTO A CAREER?
I always thought my fate was to work in fashion. I studied Media and Cultural studies and Fashion Media. I then went to work in some of fashion's biggest brands editorial and online retailers. I always found myself stressing as to if I would make my yoga or gym class after a long day. I was also suffering a lot with my mental health at the time. Anxiety was at an all time peak. The only serenity I found was in that one hour yoga or gym session.
After a while of realising I was not happy in my work, I asked myself what do I enjoy the most? Well, the answer was pretty apparent: yoga and fitness. I knew what I had to do. I booked my solo trip to India where I did my teacher training and it all changed from there. My spirit was lifted. I had a completely new outlook on life. I also was in awe with India. It is such a magical country. Since teaching I know that my calling in life is to heal people's lives through my teaching. I strive to build my students confidence and personal power.
WHO INSPIRES YOU, WHY?
My mum and dad are my biggest inspirations. Seeing how far they have come with hard work is truly inspiring. They have always taught me to never give up and that my possibilities are endless.
WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT FITNESS GOALS?
My fitness goals are to maintain what I have worked so hard for. I train at least three times a week and practice yoga four. I have started pole fitness so i think top of the list on my fitness goals is to become pro at pole fitness. It is harder than it looks!
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR NEW YOGIS?
You do not have to be flexible to start yoga. However you do need an open mind and heart. Be open to learning, also read into the real meaning of yoga, as it's not just the asana practice, yoga is a way of life and it can help you adapt. Incorporating some of the traditions and rituals of yoga into your daily life can lead to a much more happy and sustainable future for an individual.
WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU EVER RECEIVED?
I read a quote by Erica Williams Simon that says, ‘Best career advice that I can give: don’t ever attach yourself to a person, a place, a company, an organisation or a project. Attach yourself to a mission, a calling, a purpose only. That’s how you keep your power and your peace’.
Now that resonates with me so much!
OFF THE MAT, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
I love to dance and listen to music. I would call myself a party girl as I love to dance and have fun. I also love to travel and do adventurous things. Yes, when I went to Croatia I did a bungee jump over the sea! I am a fire element so I thrive when doing almost any adventurous activity.
WHAT DOES A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE MEAN TO YOU?
Healthy body and mind. The main focus is making sure your mind is healthy once you get that right then you can focus on the body. Ways too creating a healthy mind, create healthy habits; meditate, walk in nature, limit social media time, unfollow accounts that make you feel crap, read books, listening to feel good music and surrounding yourself with people who uplift you in a positive way.
